Ways to Deal with Stubborn Parents

Researchers found that 77% of adult children believe their parents are stubborn about taking their advice when it comes to their diet, driving, medication, etc. or getting help with daily problems. But there’s way to deal with aging parents who won’t listen. According to experts

  1. Figure out how important the matter is. It’s important that you intervene if it is a safety concern relating to dementia or Alzheimer’s. Don’t constantly nag them about updating their phones, joining a fitness class, or other similar tasks. Try to only bring attention to certain ones, which is the only way your parents will take your concerns seriously.
  2.  It’s advisable that you find an outlet for your feelings which can be in the form of a friend, geriatric care manager, geriatrician, online support group, sibling or therapist. These are the people you should confide in or vent to if you’re angry or resentful that Mom’s not with the program or taking her medication. It is easy to become overwhelmed with frustration, fear, and anxiety when constantly dealing with their negative behaviour especially if you act as the primary caregiver to your parents. First you need to care for yourself and keep yourself happy, then comes everything else.
  3. Instead of getting frustrated or upset with your parents about remembering important dates, help them with that to avoid potential problems. Remember, living with memory loss can be very difficult for elderly adults to deal with even if your loved one has not been diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s.
  4. For everyone, aging is a difficult process so take time to understand the motivation behind your loved one’s behavior. Many older adults live with dementia or mental health issues, so you need to understand how your parents might be feeling which can help reduce a lot of negative emotions.
  5. Do not infantilize parents, it is important to remember that they are still your parents and that they desire to be treated with respect. The objective is to help your parents receive the best care possible, so avoid behaviors such as threatening to move a parent to a nursing home/assisted living facility or insisting you always know what’s best. Plus, you’re much more likely to get positive results by treating your aging parents like the adults they are.

Ensure Your Senior Loved One’s Safety with These Smart Tech Devices

There’s no denying that smart home technology can go a long way toward making life better for our parents and senior loved ones. At the same time, you don’t want to waste your money on technology your beloved never bothers to use, or something that doesn’t make their lives any easier in any obvious way.
We are listing some smart tech devices that’ll ensure your loved one’s safety at all times:

Smart Home Sensors- Smart home sensors are a great tool that can enable families giving an aging senior their independence, while making sure they get the level of care they need and make sure they stay safe. Smart home sensors for older adults often have a component that makes it easy for the senior to call for help if there’s an emergency.

Smart Lights- Talking about seniors, falls are the number one cause of injury. According to estimates, one-third of seniors fall every year and 2.3 million of them end up in the emergency room because of a fall. Installing good lighting throughout your loved one’s house is a good way to reduce your parent’s or senior loved one’s risk of a fall. Smart lights can enable them to easily turn on a light from wherever they are. Smart lights can be turned on with a smartphone app or, if connected to a smart home assistant, with a voice command meaning one will never have to walk across a dark room to get to the light switch.

Smart Medication Dispensers- Seniors frequently have a number of meds they have to try and remember to take at specific times throughout the day, but unfortunately it is the time in life when their memory’s most likely to fail. This is where smart medication dispensers can play a huge role as they can automate the process of getting the right pills to your loved one at the right time, every day.

Here’s a list of our favorite gizmos and gadgets for those 65 and up:
  1.  Robotic Vacuums
  2.  Home Assistants like Amazon Echo and Google Home
  3.  Voice-Activated Outlets (you can connect home assistant like the Echo or Google Home to smart outlet adapters which allows you to turn your outlet on and off with a simple voice command)
  4.  Virtual Reality (VR) Goggles
  5.  Rideshare Services like Uber and Lyft (you just need a smartphone and the app)
